Angola: Petro De Luanda Thrash Benfica Do Lubango

6 October 2008

Luanda — Petro de Luanda reconfirmed its intention to win the Girabola2008 title by hammering Benfica do Lubango 4-0, in a 23rd round encounter of the national first division tournament played at Cidadela stadium, in the country's capital.

After a goalless first half, in which Petro showed their favouritism, offensive midfielder Mabiná opened the placard at 48 minutes following a cross by defender Yamba Acha, leaving no chances for Benfica's goalkeeper, Jozimar.

As a result of their determination, Petro extended its advantage through Santana, at 65, 73 and 88 minutes.

With this victory, the players coached by the Portuguese Bernardino Pedroto, continue leading the competition with 51 points, whilst Benfica do Lubango coached by Alberto Cardeau remain at the bottom of the table with 19 points.

For the same round, 1º de Agosto, direct followers of Petro de Luanda, on Saturday travelled to Moxico province and beat Bravos do Maquis, by 3-1, totalling 45 points.

The round will close on Wednesday, with the Petro do Huambo-Interclube match, since Inter was involved in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup against Sfaxien da Tunisia, in which they lost by 2-3.

Interclube is the national titleholder.
