Luanda — The United Nations director for the Global Urban Observatory, Eduardo Moreno, Sunday in Luanda expressed his impression at the progressive evolution of urban qualification and re-qualification of Angola's capital.
Eduardo Moreno expressed this after a visit he paid to various relevant investments in the capital, as part of the perspective of urban re-qualification of Luanda and regularisation of the peri-urban areas.
Eduardo Moreno and other officials who are in Angola for the celebrations of the World Habitat Day, October 6, visited the Kikuxi Water Treatment Station, outskirts of Luanda, the Zango residential areas and towers under construction, Nova Vida and Talatona projects.
The UN officials also watched a video that provides a global vision of the problematic of Luanda's urban development and aspects connected to water supply.
Eduardo Moreno encouraged the Angolan Government to continue with its projects with a view to providing housing to the populations.
He also urged the Government to direct more resources to the construction of a larger number of social houses to respond to demands in the sector.
As to the environment protection, he spoke of the need for an articulation of solutions through the conductions of studies of impact, whenever relevant undertakings are involved, with a view to the protection of the ecosystem.
He also spoke of the need for the Government to take responsibility and join all its partners that include the public and private sectors and the civil society, with a view to good results.
Accompanying the officials in the visit were the deputy ministers of Urbanisation, Mota Liz and Carla Ribeiro, Social Communication, Miguel de Carvalho, and the deputy governor of Luanda for technical affairs, Bento Soito.
Luanda is estimated to have 5.8 million inhabitants, that is one third of the country's population, 80 percent of which living in informal areas, the so-called Musseques.
Its population growth estimate until 2030 is of 16 million inhabitants.
The UN executive secretary for Human Settlement (UN Habitat), Anna Tibaijuca, of Tanzania, is in Luanda to attend the celebrations of the World Habitat Day.
