An enactment to ensure a compulsory registration of GSM lines by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) is being proposed by the Senate to checkmate crimes perpetuated with such phones in the country.
The Chairman Committee on Communication, Senator Sylvester Anyanwu, disclosed this to leadership during a chat at his country home, Obowo, Imo State.
According to him, the new NCC Act, which is presently before the Senate, would mandate operators to register every subscriber.
Anyanwu also disclosed that his committee, through its oversight function, worked out a whopping N4 billion compensation to Nigerian subscribers from the tight hands of telecom operators, assuring that Senate was poised to promote quality services in the industry .
He explained that his committee was not working towards trimming down the profit margin of telecom operators but that the protection of subscribers remained paramount to the Senate.
He added that a 10 per cent decrease in tariff would be implemented in December 2008.
He described President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's seven -point agenda as a catalyst to the achievements recorded by the past administration, declaring that Senate would support the government.
