Harare — FORMER national cricket team captain Tatenda Taibu yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates' Courts for allegedly assaulting a Zimbabwe Cricket manager over an outstanding salary.
Taibu (25), who was represented by Harare lawyer Mr Beloved Dhlakama, was not asked to plead to assault charges when he was arraigned before magistrate Ms Olivia Mariga.
He was remanded out of custody to November 7 for trial.
The trial failed to kick off yesterday after Mr Dhlakama told the court that his colleague Mr Jonathan Samkange, who is supposed to represent Taibu, was out of the country and would only be available on November 7.
Mr Dhlakama brought to the court's attention that the same case was on Saturday taken to court, but Taibu could not be placed on remand since there were no witnesses for the trial to open.
Subsequently, he was temporarily set free and yesterday he came to court from his home on summons.
Prosecutor Mr Gift Zumbika alleges that on September 30 this year, Taibu who wanted his outstanding payments from ZC, phoned the organisation's general manager (finance and administration) Ms Esther Chagadama (widely known as Mrs Lupepe) enquiring about her whereabouts.
It is the State's case that Ms Chagadama directed Taibu to Tour Africa premises at Number 34 Baines Avenue, where she was meeting the firm's director.
Taibu allegedly drove to Tour Africa where he demanded to know the reason why he had not received his salary.
Ms Chagadama allegedly told him that a transfer was going to be made into his account the following day, but this did not go down well with Taibu who allegedly grabbed Ms Chagadama by the collar of her jacket in full view of Tour Africa staffers.
Some Tour Africa employees came to Ms Chagadama's rescue and restrained the cricketer.
Ms Chagadama reported the matter to the police leading to Taibu's arrest.
