At the end of the one-day International Golf tournament played at the IBB International Golf and County club, between host IBB International Golf, country club and Achimota Golf club of Accra Ghana, the host won by a total of 27 wins to 26 recorded by the visitors.
The previous tournament which was held in March this year in Ghana saw the Achimota Golf club of emerging winners by 4 wins. On this return leg played in Abuja last week, the Nigerian golfers avenged the defeat suffered in Ghana with a total of 27 wins .
On day 1 of the double match play, Nigeria won by 11 games while Ghana polled 8 wins, but on Day 2 singles match play, the Nigerian golfers lost the encounter to the Ghanaians with 16 games against 18 from Ghana.
Aragbaye Ade-young, who received the trophy for Nigeria at the end of the 2-day golf tournament on behalf of the IBB International Golf and country club, said Nigeria deserved the win after going through intensive preparations for the tournament.
"It is a good victory for Nigeria. I am happy for Nigeria. We prepared well for the tournament and Ghana came with some of their best golfers. With this victory, I am looking forward to the next tournament in Accra where Nigeria is expected to defend the trophy."
Former lady Captain of the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Aphia Yaduma, a member of the Organising Committee, said the tournament was of high standard and well attended.
"I am happy with the level of organisation of the golf tournament. It was a success, having over 150 amateur golfers playing at both the Independence Golf Tournament and the International Match Play between Nigeria and Ghana."
At the end of the Independence Day Golf Tournament organised to commemorate Nigeria's 48 years anniversary, Moses Anabui emerged winner of the 48 edition of the golf tourney.
He returned a gross of 76 and a net score of 71 to dethrone last year's winner, Alex Izinyon. In the lady's category 1, Uloma Mbuko the number 1 lady's amateur golfer in Nigeria played 76 gross and 75 net to win, while in the men's category, Tony Azogu played 82 count bars to win. Paul Erokro, captain of the club described the tournament as successful.
