In a bid to encourage girlchild education, the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is to adopt a community approach through sensitizing the traditional rulers and village heads.
The Acting Chairman of the council, Mr. Danlami Saleh Yebu, who stated this while speaking to newsmen yesterday, said the council will liaise with the elected councillors in the ten wards of the council to educate parents on the significance of girl child education.
He explained that the decision by the council to embark on vigorous campaigns on the girl child education, was due to the low level of education, especially among the females, adding that it has subjected them to child abuse.
He observed that most parents' especially those in rural communities have subjected their female children to farming and hawking items like banana, pure water and orange on the streets.
Ho noted that most of them ended up having unwanted pregnancies which result to early marriages, saying that most parents do not know the important of girl child education.
Yebu attributed the lack of proper education among children to poverty and illiteracy, saying his administration was making efforts to tackle the girl child education through the provision of scholarships.
"The issue of girl education is one of the priorities of this administration. Because if we have resources and a child is not given proper education, I think there is the need for parents to hold us responsible if we fail to do it. So we think the only way we can easily arrest the situation is through sensitizing the traditional rulers and all village heads," he said.
He stated further that the council has paid ninety percent of completed projects that was awarded by the late chairman, Mr. Samuel M Gwamna, adding that the council has also awarded a contract for the construction of Phase 2 road in the council.
The chairman also thanked residents for their support and cooperation which they have accorded him while piloting the affairs of the council..
