Lagos — Hard time now await tax evaders in Ekiti State, as the state is to establish a Revenue Court to prosecute defaulters
The State Acting Chief Judge, Justice Silas Oyewole, stated this yesterday in Ado-Ekiti at a special court sitting to mark the commencement of the 2008/2009 legal year in the state.
Oyewole noted that the law establishing the revenue court would soon be passed by the state House of Assembly, saying the specialisecd court when established would prosecute tax offenders and increase the Revenue base of the State Government.
According to him, "it is now being noted that the revenue law would soon be passed for the establishment of Revenue Court in the State."This cadre of court when established would greatly assist the state government in the prosecution of tax offenders and further increase the revenue accruing to the coffers of the state government".
Speaking on the welfare of the judicial officers Oyewole said that all the judges and magistrates had been provided with new cars while laptop computers had equally been purchased for Judges to ease their operations.
He charged judges, magistrates and other judicial officers in the state to always ensure that their actions are guided by the provisions of the constitution and the fear of God.
In his speech, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Gboyega Oyewole said that the government is planning a financial autonomy for the judiciary with the sending of the bill for the autonomy of the state judiciary to the House of Assembly for passage.
He said that the passage of the bill would improve the finances of the state judiciary "rather than to go cap-in-hand for funds from the executive arm".
While commending the co-operation of the judiciary with the executive arm, Oyewole promised the judiciary of government is commitment to the rule of Law and their better performance.
Governor, Segun Oni of Ekiti State, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Ambassador Dare Bejide promised the judicial officers of good welfare package.
