Windhoek — The strike by dissatisfied lecturers at teachers training colleges around the country was averted, albeit for a while.
This follows Government's request on Friday for the lecturers to set aside a day to meet and discuss the issue with the Namibia National Teachers Union (Nantu), an affiliate of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW).
The new date was set for today, and pending the outcome of today's meeting only then will the lecturers consider what route to take.
"The outcome of the meeting will determine our next cause of action - if it is favourable to us we might call off the strike, but if not, then Wednesday's examinations are off."
On Friday last week the lecturers issued an ultimatum to Government threatening their employer that they will not conduct and supervise any of the examinations set for tomorrow. Their dissatisfaction stems from what they labelled delaying tactics by the Government Negotiating Team (GNT) to negotiate a salary deal. The body is responsible for salary negotiations with the bargaining union.
Today's meeting is set to discuss proposals made by both parties with regard to the lecturers' pay increases. Lecturers say the issue has been dragging on for long, starting in 2003.
