Windhoek — Despite being described by its inhabitants as a historical town full of tourism opportunities, Omaruru remains underdeveloped with most of the town's population still languishing in poverty.
Omaruru Town Mayor Michael Tjirare says because of its small size, most people think there are no economic opportunities in Omaruru.
Young people are also not entrepreneurial enough to start up businesses or engage in activities that will enhance their economic status.
Tjirare told New Era that Omaruru is centrally located in the Erongo Region and thus can be made a gateway to tourist favoured areas such as the White Lady and the Spitzkoppe.
"It is peaceful and quiet. The youth could start up activities that showcase the culture and lifestyle of the people here," he says.
With a population of about 10 000 inhabitants plus surroundings areas, Tjirare says the local authority is in the process of undertaking a field survey that would assess the needs.
"The findings will help us when we lobby for investors. It will also help us know what projects to initiate for the community in the fight against unemployment," he added.
The mayor called on non-governmental organisations to take development to the town, adding that the move will help unleash the potential of Omaruru.
