The tug-of-war between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates regarding the registration of Siphelele Mthembu is finally over, after the PSL's DRC ruled in favour of the Buccaneers.
Kaizer Chiefs revealed that they will first study the judgment before making a decision on whether to appeal the verdict, which they have to do within seven days.
The PSL released a statement reading:
After sitting for almost two months, the Premier Soccer's League's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) has reached its decision in the case between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates concerning player, Siphelele Mthembu.
The two teams contested that Mthembu is their player after he signed contracts with them.
Orlando Pirates had earlier registered Mthembu as their player after signing a contract with the former Maritzburg City Player.
Kaizer Chiefs also claimed that they signed a contract with Mthembu at the same time and that the player belongs to them.
Chiefs took the matter to the PSL's DRC which sat down at the start of the season.
Convenor of the DRC, Zola Majavu, handed down the verdict today.
Majavu confirmed the following:
The contract between Orlando Pirates and Siphelele Mthembu is valid.
The registration of Mthembu as a player for Orlando Pirates is proper
There is no order as to costs.
The League is ordered to immediately prefer disciplinary charges against Mthembu for misconduct in terms of rule 35.16.2
Majavu also confirmed that any aggrieved party has the right to lodge an appeal with the SAFA Appeals Board within seven days of the date of the ruling.
In February this year, KickOff.com reported the matter and got hold of Maritzburg City owner, Bongi Hlophe.
Hlophe conceded that Amakhosi did approach him for the services of the player first, but says that they could not agree on terms and that the news that he has spoken to Pirates are totally untrue.
"I never refused to release the player to Chiefs; we did not agree on terms. Regarding the issue of Pirates, I don't know where those reports come from as I haven't spoken to anyone from the Buccaneers."
