7 October 2008

Kampala — APAC district council is formulating a by-law prohibiting school-going children from fishing. During a council meeting on Friday, the leader of government business, Bob Okae, said reports indicated that several school boys were dropping out, in favour of the lucrative fishing trade on Lake Kwania.

"In most landing sites, there are young fishers who escape from school," Okae, also the district vice-chairman, said. He advised the local leaders to get involved in the management of primary schools in their jurisdiction.

He also cautioned the adult fishermen against child labour, saying the promoters would be prosecuted.

Okae said fines would be levied on parents who allow their children to abandon schools for domestic chores.

He added that most affected areas were those on the lake shores. He urged the teachers to allow local leaders access pupils' attendance registers to track down defaulters.

The district leader also called for sensitisation of all stakeholders on their roles in the education of the children.
