Lagos — The Federal Government have been called upon to look into the issues of remuneration and conditions of service of principal officers, in the Nigerian Polytechnic system.

Associate Lecturer in the Accounting Department, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Mr. Joseph Babatunde Akeju, who made the call at the public presentation of the book, 'Financial Accounting Volume 11', written by him, weekend in Lagos, said the paraphernalia of office of the Registrar, Bursar and the librarian were not properly spelt out. They are therefore left at the mercy of the Rectors, who in most cases are not concerned or use such office as a weapon of oppression.

The Author, who is a former Bursar of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) said, "the government should urgently do something in this regard to enable these officers enjoy the paraphernalia that are commensurate to their office."

Akeju also called on the government not to appoint politicians who have no passion for academic excellence into the councils of the universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

He said, "Those who are not hungry, those who abhor looting, those who are great philanthropists and those who are interested in human capital development should be the ones to serve as board members of tertiary institutions so as to make meaningful progress in our education system."

This group of people, the author said, would ensure that the scarce resources of the university system and their personal donations are injected into the system in order to create comfort and convenience for staff and students.

One his book, he said it covers, comprehensively, the account of specialised businesses, professional service providers, business combinations, capital reduction and reconstruction, among others.

He added that the textbook would be useful for candidates preparing for professional examinations such as those of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), among others.

Head of Accounting Department, Dr. Semiu Adeyemi, said the department would adopt the book as part of its reading text at every level. He commended the Author, saying the book would go a long way in teaching great minds.
