Nigeria: American Presidential Election

Lagos — As the American Election Day approaches, the Americans voters are constantly racking their brains to elect the most suitable candidate who will truly and really bring the much-vaunted change. While some voters had already made up their minds on the presidential candidate of the choice, others are probably waiting for the last minute to do so. Yet there are a few who are unlikely to make up their minds even on Election Day.

Despite the strong Obama appeal, pundits are still having a hard time predicting the final outcome of the Election. The recent Wall Street meltdown which compelled President W. Bush to invite both John McCain and Barack Obama to the White House for a financial bail out, has more than increased the presidential stakes. Americans are not just looking forward to any change. They look forward to a positive change that will redeem them from the present economic distress and other pressing domestic problems. Right now the great crunch is on. Unemployment is biting hard. There are only a few jobs for too many. In the New York Bronx there are even beggars in the streets. Cases of arson, crimes are reordered in some black neighbourhoods. Restructuring and downsizing are taking place everywhere. The bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, the sale of Merrill Lynch to Bank of America, the 500 plunge of the Dow, the government take over of AIG are some of bitter fallouts of the financial crisis.
