The FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar has said that all public buildings under construction in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja must be insured in line with internationally agreed guidelines.
The minister gave this assurance yesterday in his office, while receiving members of Nigerian Insurers Association, led by its Chairman, Mr. Wole Oshin who paid him a courtesy call.
Dr. Modibbo recalled with regret, the unfortunate incident of building collapse in Utako District of the Federal Capital City and reiterated that the FCT Administration has dug into the remote and immediate causes of the collapse with a view to tackling its re-occurrence.
The minister emphasised that the FCT Administration is assiduously working to put into action the recommendations of the committee that investigated the collapsed building and hoped that such ugly incident may never be repeated in the history of the Federal Capital Territory.
He stated that all relevant FCT departments have been instructed to ensure that individual and organisational developers comply with the law by insuring all public building under construction in the Federal Capital Territory.
Modibbo insisted that all recommendations of the committee on the collapsed building would be implemented to the later; adding that, "that is why the FCT Administration released its findings/report as well as the White Paper on the collapsed building to the press for transparency".
The minister, who was represented at the occasion by his Chief of Staff, Engineer Adamu Ismaila, also assured that all vehicles plying Abuja roads would be made to have motor vehicle (Third Party) insurance, because that is what the law says.
He noted that all FCT Administration assets have been insured with reputable insurance companies to show good example to residents and corporate organisations in Abuja.
Speaking earlier, the Chairman of Nigerian Insurers Association, Mr. Wole Oshin said, the Association is the umbrella body for all Insurance Companies in Nigeria, to ensure that members carry out insurance business according to the laws of the land and global professional ethics as well as code of practice.
The chairman sought the minister's cooperation in ensuring that adequate and relevant insurance covers are taken to protect the assets of the FCT Administration as well as backing it up with adequate budgetary provision for premium payment.
He promised that members would live up to their promise by ensuring prompt settlement of claims.
