South Africa: Argus Writer Awarded for Island Expose

7 October 2008

An expose of the environmental disaster on Robben Island earlier this year has garnered Cape Argus environment and science writer John Yeld an award in the prestigious 2008 Vodacom journalist of the year awards.

At a function at a Mouille Point hotel on Monday night, Yeld was named winner of the print news category in the regional round of this competition. The national finals will be held in Johannesburg next month.

Three years ago, Yeld won both the regional and the national awards in the print feature category of this competition for a series of articles on the impact of golf and polo estates on the Garden Route.

Earlier this year, he was also honoured with a Kudu award from SA National Parks and an award from the regional branch of Wessa (Wildlife and Environment Society of SA).

Yeld, 58, has been a full-time Cape Argus staffer since 1980 and has been writing about environmental issues for more than 20 years.

Chris Whitfield, editor of the Cape Argus, said: "John is an outstanding journalist and this award is a richly-deserved recognition of his perseverance, diligence and talent."
