Genebra — Angolan minister of Social Welfare, João Baptista Kussumua, Tuesday in Geneva (Switzerland) highlighted the "significant changes" occurring in the country and the successful election held on September 5 this year.
The minister who is at the head of the Angolan delegation to the 59th session of the Executive Committee of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), that started Monday, underlined the participation of Angola at a moment of significant changes in the country's political, economic and social situation.
He mentioned that since 2002, the Angolan Government has been conducting, in a successful way, a process of national reconciliation and cohesion that reached its pick about a month ago, with the holding of legislative election seen by the international community as exemplary.
João Baptista Kussumua also underlined the high level of civism and political tolerance showed by the citizens.
"With the legitimacy granted by the Angolan people, expressed through the election results, the new government takes with responsibility the continuity of the programme of reconstruction of the country, based on mechanisms of good governance," he stated.
according to minister Kussumua, the stability prevailing in Angola has motivated many nationals, who took refuge in some countries like Zambia, the Congos and Namibia, to change their views and expressed the wish to return home.
He stated as well that the Government is committed to establishing an aid project in favour of the return of Angolan nationals living as refugees.
"We have reiterated to the Governments of those brother countries the commitment to, together, establish a combined plan of implementation of lasting solutions, within the marks set under the refugees convention.
João Baptista Kussumua said as well that Angola is counting on the UNHCR experience for the formulation of a national policy on asylum, return and reintegration, so that the migration restricting measures adopted do not go against those seeking security and protection.
Angola's delegation to the 59th session of the UNHCR includes the standing representative to the UN organisations, ambassador, Arcanjo Maria do Nascimento, and other officials of the Social Welfare Ministry.
