4 October 2008

Tunis — With the oncoming opening (October 20) of a new golf course in Carthage, Tunisia is rapidly gaining a reputation as one of the Mediterranean's foremost golfing destinations.

The five star "Residence Hotel" which is home to Tunisia's tenth golf course, entrusted the famous golf course designer, Robert Trent Jones II with designing the18 hole course.

Located in the middle of a natural bird reserve and located some 10minutes from the ancient site of Carthage, the new golf course has been dubbed by "World Travel Market" as a "veritable jewel".

Tunisia's nine other golf courses which are located respectively in Hammamet, El Kantaoui(near Sousse), Monastir, Tabarka , Djerba and Tozeur, all offer year long golfing activities owing to the country's temperate climate.

Two of Tunisia's most stunning golf courses are respectively, the "Oasis golf course" in Tozeur where it is possible to practice one's swing under the lush palm groves of Tozeur's oasis, itself located on the edge of the Sahara desert, and the Tabarka golf course, located at the farther northern tip of Tunisia, also known as the "coral coast".

Stretching between 270 acres of pine and eucalyptus trees and the sea, the Tabarka golf course(see photograph) is one of the most picturesque golfing destinations in the Mediterranean.

The town is also home to a magnificent Genoese fort, a historical testimony to 2 centuries of Genoese presence (1541-1741).
