Tunis — The Association of the Mediterranean Network for Sustainable Development (AREMEDD) and the national program of cleanliness and environmental embellishment, launched on Tuesday at la Marsa, north of Tunis, the 4th sensitization campaign for "a clean sea for all".
The campaign which is due to last till end of August 2008,will cover 20 major Tunisian beaches from the northern tip of Tabarka to Zarzis, in southern Tunisia.
The event will take place concurrently with similar campaigns in France, Spain, Italy, Turkey and Portugal, and will be marked by the presence of a number of children from popular districts, scouts, as well as several components of civil society.
The event was also characterized by the organisation of events aiming an increased awareness of ecological issues such as plastic waste collection, cleanliness of the beaches, fight against sea erosion, as well as the preservation of biodiversity.
The president of the national committee of cleanliness and environmental embellishment, Mr Mohamed Mehdi Mlika, noted that this campaign is the occasion to deepen reflection on the fight against sea pollution and to set up a Euro-Mediterranean partnership, so as to implement the goals of sustainable development.
In a related event, la Marsa also hosted the first edition of the carnival dubbed "Flowers for an improved quality of life ", which was attended by several musical bands composed of young people.
