Tunis — A United Nations communiqué , announces that the United Nations Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki- Moon and the African Union Chairperson, Mr Jean Ping, have appointed Mr Azouz Enneifar of Tunisia as Deputy Joint African Union - United Nations Mediator for Darfur.
Mr Enneifar will assist the joint AU- UN Chief Mediator for Darfur , Mr Djibril Yipene Bassole of Bukina Fasso.
The communiqué writes that Mr Enneifar brings to this position extensive experience in peacekeeping, mediation and diplomacy. He served as Acting Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea from July 2005 to July 2008.
Mr Enneifar has a distinguished career in the Tunisian foreign service, serving as Tunisia's Ambassador to the US, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, Brazil, and Italy. He also served as Tunisia's representative at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
The United Nations and the African union control a joint peace keeping force known as UNAMID, aimed at separating belligerents and protecting civilians .
It is estimated that the five-year conflict in Darfur has killed some 300,000 people and displaced 2,7 million.
