2 September 2008

Tunis — The meeting of the executive bureau of the National Olympic Committee on Monday, focused on the assessment of the Tunisian participation in the recent Beijing 2008 Olympic games which took place from August 8 to 24, 2008.

After reviewing the results of Tunisia's participation in the games, the committee noted they were below the expectations and the sacrifices incurred by the State to ensure that the country's sports elite undergoes the best preparation possible.

The executive bureau also reviewed the causes of the poor record of the country's athletes and recommended to draw adequate conclusions to prepare for the future, stressing the need to set up a rigorous strategy in view of forthcoming regional, international and Olympic events.

Several recommendations with a view of improving the country's results in major international competitions were made and will shortly be examined by the Minister of Sports and Physical Education.

On the positive side, the bureau expressed its satisfaction at the feat of the Tunisian Olympic Champion Oussama Mellouli following his gold medal in the 1500 metres freestyle swimming competition in Beijing.

It also expressed its consideration for the tribute that President Ben Ali paid to Oussama Mellouli, following his Olympic prowess, a testimony of the Head of State's support given to sports and sportsmen, as well his encouragements to those of them who manage to raise high Tunisia's flag, in major international events.
