Tunisia: Tunisian Solidarity Experience Honored in Geneva

Tunis — The experience of the Tunisian National Solidarity Fund (FSN) also known as 26-26 Fund www.26-26.org , from its postal account number, was under focus at the social forum of the Council of Human Rights in Geneva, from September 1 to 3, 2008.

Tunisia was officially invited as guest of honor to the meeting.

Several participants to the forum voiced their consideration for the success of the 26-26 Fund, in combating poverty in Tunisia and expressed the view that the Tunisian experience could become an encouraging model for other developing countries.

The forum which is a space of discussion and exchange for the promotion of the social and economic rights of people, gathered all the parties concerned by the fight against poverty, including states, multinational companies and civil society.

Mr Omar Ben Mahmoud , the Secretary of State in charge of the National Solidarity Fund, reviewed the Fund's many achievements in Tunisia , while highlighting the fact that the Tunisian experience is now exported abroad and especially in Africa.

He also said that it was following an initiative by President Ben Ali that the World Solidarity Fund was set up after a decision of the United Nations General Assembly.
