Tunis — As he received on Friday Mr Abdelbaki Hermassi, the president of the Higher Communication Council, President Ben Ali took cognizance of the progress of the activities program of the Council.
He also focused on the sector of audiometry as well as on the export of Tunisia's audiovisual products abroad and the Council's external cooperation program. In this respect, he approved the organisation of an African Conference on the audiovisual sector.
On his part, Mr Abdelbaki Hermassi expressed the consideration of the members of the Council to the Head of State for his constant support to the Council which provides a favourable setting for the interaction of ideas, professional skills, and debate among representatives of public establishments, political parties, and civil society, which is likely to contribute to the consecration of the pioneering decisions of the President of the Republic for a free and pluralistic information.
A consultative body entrusted with promoting the information sector, the Higher Communication Council was set up following a presidential decision in January 1989.
Recently, the prerogatives of the Council were widened to include the examination of applications for private radio and television stations in the future, as well as to foster a reflection on how to further promote a free and pluralistic media.
