Kampala — The lands state minister, Dr. Kasirivu Atwooki, has said the Government is investing a lot in the education sector in order to improve the welfare of teachers.
"Since the NRM Government came into power in 1986, it has been putting a lot of resources into the education sector to improve the welfare of the teachers."
Presiding over the World Teachers' Day cerebrations in Kibaale district on Tuesday, the minister encouraged students who pass highly to opt for education.
"You should revive the prestige of the teaching profession to that of the old days when teachers were respected people in society.
Atwooki acknowledged the role played by the teachers in shaping the future of many people, adding that teaching is a noble profession.
He presented 96 certificates to outstanding teachers and head teachers.
The minister also launched the teachers' savings credit and cooperative organisation with a contribution of sh500,000.
Meanwhile, primary school teachers in the district have asked the Government to increase their salaries, citing the rising cost of living.
This request was contained in a memorandum read by William Baleke, the secretary general of the Uganda National Teachers Union.
George William Namyaka, the district chairperson, Catherine Kamwine, the deputy resident district commissioner (RDC), George William Bizibu, the secretary for education and Ignatius Besisira, the Kamwenge RDC, attended.
