Kampala — State minister for primary health-care Emmanuel Otaala has commended Japan for its assistance, which he said had promoted living standards in Uganda.
Addressing a workshop on Japan's development assistance to Uganda at Mbale Resort Hotel on Friday, Otaala described Japan as a 'reliable and consistent partner' in development efforts and had supported a number of sectors.
He said Japan has supported the health sector and that mortality among the poor had reduced.
"In the eastern region health units in Soroti, Mbale, Tororo, Bugiri and Busia district have been rehabilitated, equipped and supplied with ambulances. This has greatly improved service delivery and referral of patients," Otaala said
Deputy ambassador Kazuaki Kameda said his government had pledged to double aid to Africa by 2012.
Minister Dorothy Hyuha urged Japan to support agriculture, which she said was the main economic activity of the people in the region.
