Over 50 support staff in the industrial division of Mbale municipality have been sacked.

Assistant town clerk Simon Watti said he was implementing the directive of the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Vincent Ssenkkono.

Watti said volunteers, personal assistants to political leaders and assistant accountants were affected. He said they were recruited "improperly" and were not budgeted for.

He said "temporary staff" expect to be automatically recruited whenever whenever vacancies arise. The next recruitment, he said, will be based on posts provided for in the municipal structures and budgeted for.
