The independent Mozambican media company SOICO has relaunched its weekly paper "O Pais" as a daily.
Printed on a new press in the southern city f Matola, the first issue of the daily "O Pais" hit the streets on Tuesday. In Maputo, it sold out in a couple of hours.
"O Pais" is in direct competition with the Maputo daily "Noticias". Both sell at the same price of 15 meticais (62 US cents), but there is much more to read in "O Pais". It is a 32 page full colour tabloid, while "Noticias" is a broadsheet, usually with 24 pages - but 14 of these pages are advertising.
The only other daily paper in the country is the Beira-based "Diario de Mocambique", which circulates mainly in the central provinces, and has a cover price of ten meticais. Its small circulation (believed to be about 5,000) is unlikely to be damaged by "O Pais".
"Noticias", however, could suffer severe damage. Citizens are unlikely to buy more than one daily paper, and "O Pais", with its full colour photographs and dynamic layout, looks a much more attractive product than "Noticias".
SOICO declares that it intends "O Pauis" to be the largest circulation paper in the country. It may already have achieved this. A SOICO source told AIM that the print run of "O Pais" is 30,000.
If that is true (and the Mozambican press has a habit of inflating circulation figures) that is more than twice the average print run of "Noticias" or of any of the country's weekly papers, except for "A Verdade" (a Maputo weekly whose 50,000 copies are distributed free of charge).
SOICO has also established its own distribution channels, setting up a new company, "Velox" to deal with all logistical issues.
SOICO also owns the television station STV, and the radio station SFM.
