Popular African National Congress (ANC) stalwart, Matthew Phosa, is billed to be the guest speaker at a Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) women's wing fund-raising event at Francistown's Tati River Lodge this weekend.

BDP women's wing chairperson Tebelelo Seretse says they invited the ANC official to share with them how to empower women in politics. "We have a relationship with the ANC," Seretse says.

"He will be coming as the guest speaker. You will realise that as women here, we are not doing as well as women in South Africa in politics.

We have a plan to visit the ANC women's wing and share experiences."

Says BDP Secretary General Jacob Nkate: "The ANC is a very important ally. South Africa is a major economy. If we can get our partnership with the ANC on track, we can make a big impact as a party.

We want to grow our relations with the ANC. We continue to explore ways of working together."Nkate says his party's chairman Daniel Kwelagobe and other senior officials had visited the ANC in South Africa. "I am also planning to go there and meet with the secretary general some time next year," he says.

The BDP women's wing fund-raiser aims to raise P60, 000 for the party. Seretse says they have printed P100, 000 worth of tickets for sale at P200 per person. "We are targeting to raise P60, 000 after expenses," she says. "We are confident we can reach that target."

The funds will be used to revive the party's women's structures throughout the country. "We need the money to achieve that," Seretse adds.

"We have already toured 24 constituencies reviving the structures. But next year being an election year, we will use part of the money to help the BDP in its campaigns. We will be raising this money for the main party as well."
