"MONUC is going to continue to help the FARDC fully in their efforts to restore state authority throughout all the Democratic Republic of Congo," said MONUC Force Commander General Vincente Diaz de Hellegas, in an interview granted to Radio Okapi Goma on Wednesday 8 October 2008.
He explained that during a tour of inspection and meetings with his troops on the ground, he saw firsthand the war that continues, causing massive population displacement.
"If they want our joint action to have real results, the FARDC must not undertake some operations without first warning MONUC."
Concerning the armed groups, the General said: "The most important wealth for which these people must fight, is the people. Every human being has the right to peace and to life."
He concluded the interview by insisting that MONUC will be with the Congolese people until the end of the Amani process.
