The Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) "have developed a lot" in these 17 years of existence, in the organisational point of view, structural insertion and deployment in the whole territory, considered this Wednesday, in Luanda, its chief of staff.

General Francisco Pereira Furtado expressed this at a joint interview to the Angola Press Agency (ANGOP) and the state-run radio (RNA), under the celebrations of October 09, date of the approval, in 1991, of the guideline nº 1/CCFA, by the former Joint Political-Military Commission (CCPM) in charge of supervising the Bicesse Accords (Portugal), for the end of war in Angola.

The accord resulted in the creation of the single army, with the integration of militaries from the former UNITA guerrilla forces into the government forces.

The chief of staff described the ongoing changes, in the Army, Navy and Air Force, academic and professional training of troops and their social conditions, border protection, launching of the military industry, in the country, and the political-military situation in the northern Cabinda province.

He stated that the rebuilding process, which started in October 2006 and whose first phase will end in 2012, aims at fitting the Angolan Armed Forces to the political-strategic state of affairs of the Republic of Angola, in view of changes in the Southern African region, in the continent (in general) and in the rest of the world.

Speaking about training, the officer general said that the education system was updated, a change that enabled the emerging of the Higher Technical-Military Institute (ISTM), an institution specialised in organising into regiments staves specialised in various subjects (medicine, engineering, among others).

On the other hand, he announced the start functioning, soon, of the Military Academy, Officers Inter-Weapons and Speciality schools, and Army, Navy and Air Force institutes.

Regarding social conditions, he assured that substantial improvement has been made to the salary issue, medical and medicine assistance, for militaries and their respective families.

Concerning the garrison of the national borders, he affirmed that the Armed Forces are ready to guarantee the protection of marks, in accordance of the Charter of the African Union and of the United Nations (UN).
