Bakassi returnees are yet to be accommodated as contractors handling the construction of various parts of the Estates have refused to hand over the keys and completed quarters to the Cross River State Government.

The reason for this action was not immediately known as at the time of going to the Press.

Governor Liyel Imoke, according to investigation, had directed the contractors to hand over the keys of the houses to the Government, possibly to enable her (State Government) settle the refugees. The contractors, our source revealed, were given up to September 16th to complete the projects or be sanctioned.

The visit to the Estates at Obutong revealed that while some contractors were able to keep to the deadline others were still battling to complete the projects. Most of the contractors are still at lintel level while others are to roof the quarters. Again, others are yet to be painted.

It is interesting to note that the resettlement camp where the refugees were kept have been closed down officially by the State Emergency Management Agency.
