African Union (Addis Ababa)

PRESS RELEASE
7 October 2008
Posted to the web 9 October 2008

Addis Ababa

The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) is keenly following the political situation in Mauritania in light of the communiqué adopted by the 151st meeting of the Peace and Security Council (PSC), held in New York on 22 September 2008.

In the course of the past weeks, and as a follow-up to the decision of the PSC, the Chairperson of the Commission held intense consultations with the AU partners within the international community in order to mobilize further support for the AU efforts. In this regard, the Chairperson of the Commission welcomes the unanimous demand by the international community for the return to constitutional order in Mauritania. The Chairperson of the Commission has equally made contacts with leaders of the coup d’Etat to reiterate the demand of the PSC.

In view of the lack of progress towards the restoration of constitutional order as demanded by the PSC, the Chairperson of the Commission will, in due course, submit concrete proposals on the way forward in accordance with the letter and spirit of the communiqué of 22 September 2008, in order to hasten the attainment of the objective being pursued.

In the meantime, the Chairperson of the Commission urges, once again, the authors of the coup d’Etat to reconsider their position in the supreme interest of Mauritania, and to fully appreciate the determination of the AU and its Member States not to accept a fait accompli regarding the unconstitutional change of Government which took place on 6 August 2008. In this regard, the Chairperson of the Commission seized the opportunity of the meeting he had today, in Addis Ababa, with the delegation sent by the coup d’Etat leaders to reiterate the AU position as determined by its relevant policy organs.
