Teachers have been asked to play a leading role in the review of the country's education system.

Addressing primary school headteachers at their annual conference in Mombasa on Wednesday, lawyer Patrick Lumumba said teachers should not relegate their responsibilities to politicians.

"Teachers have a role to play in ensuring that the education curriculum that we come up with serves the interests of all Kenyans."

Public servants

He cautioned that if allowed to control the process, politicians would root for a system that served their interests.

The theme of this year's conference is national reconciliation and healing through education.

Dr Lumumba said teachers should be posted to teach anywhere in the country to encourage nationalism.

He lamented the commercialisation of education, saying it had compromised integrity hitherto associated with teaching.

In reference to Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka's announcement on Tuesday that teachers' salaries would be harmonised with those of other public servants, he said: "I hope the announcement the Vice-President made here was not mere talk and that it will be acted upon."
