Kampala — The absence of Simon Ayeko will pave way for upcoming stars to steal the limelight when the Athletics Kampala road running season resumes on Saturday at Lugogo.
Ayeko won the Uhuru road race last year but will miss out on this year's edition due to a busy schedule.
The Uhuru road race, organised to celebrate Uganda's Independence, was postponed from last Saturday due to unavoidable circumstances but Athletics Kampala officials say everything is now set.
"Up to 80 pairs of second hand shoes will be given out to all competitors who successfully complete the race. The shoes are second-hand, but in good condition and have been provided by American donors," Athletics Kampala member Kevin O'Cnnor said in a press statement yesterday.
Athletics Kampala general secretary John Bosco Bananuka has called on competitors to assemble at National Council of Sports (NCS) headquarters in Lugogo at 8 a.m. for registration.
"We shall determine the competition categories after registration. But be sure, we shall be setting off for the first race at 9 a.m," Bananuka revealed.
Women's defending champion Jane Suuto is expected to face a bruising challenge from national half marathon champion Adero Nyakisi. Suuto easily won last year's race in Kansanga but Prisons' Nyakisi has greatly improved recently and will be favourite on Saturday.
