Uganda: Ruggers in Pool Fat Nakuru Sevens

Kampala — The Rugby Cranes must take an elongated path in their quest for the annual Prinsloo Nakuru Sevens, as entries for the prestigious showpiece have hit 24. The tournament is set for October 10-11 at Nakuru Athletics Club.

With preparations for the 2009 International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens Rugby World Cup (RWC) qualifiers in Tunisia later this month in high gear, Uganda are drawn in Pool F alongside two University sides - Strathmore and Mount Kenya, as well as Kenya Cup winners Harlequins RFC.

Harlequins will be the hardest nuts to crack with Kenya's national 7s stars Allan Onyango, Allan Makaka and Victor Sudi in their ranks while Strathmore's Philip Moturi will lead the students' side.

Favourites Mwamba RFC with Kenya 7s captain Humphrey Kayange, Collins Injera, Horace Otieno, George Mbaye (all internationals) is drawn in Pool A along with USIU, Masinde and Kimathi.

Coach John Musoke, director of coaching David Dobela and skipper Timothy Mudoola will lead the 12-man team challenging for places on the flight to Tunisia.

It will the ruggers last warm up tourney before the litmus test of qualification and only group winners and two best runners-up will advance to the Main Cup quarters.

In a related development, Uganda has risen from 38th to 37th in the latest IRB world rankings released by the world body this week.

On the continent, they are fourth behind world champions South Africa (2nd) and North African giants Tunisia and Morocco who are ranked 29th and 34th respectively.
