Angola: USA Discuss Defence Issues

Luanda — Angolan Foreign minister, Assunção dos Anjos, Thursday in Luanda, received in audience the US deputy assistant secretary of Defence for Africa, Theresa Whelan, with whom he discussed matters related to defence between the two countries.

At the end of the audience, the US official expressed satisfaction and stated that cooperation between the two countries has been good.

Theresa Whelan said as well the meeting with the local Foreign minister was owed to the sector being responsible for the articulation of the country's external policy.

She said she has met with the Defence minister, Kundi Paihama, and with the chief of Staff of the Angola Armed Forces (FAA), gen. Francisco Pereira Furtado.

Theresa Whelan explained that the USA, through cooperation in the domain of Defence, contribute to a major development in such areas as education, health and infrastructures.

The official said as well that the two countries enjoy cooperation in maritime security and health, with stress to matters of Hiv.

In Angola since Wednesday for a two-day visit, Theresa Whelan is responsible for the US Defence policy for Africa and has a 17-year experience in issues that concern the continent.
