Kampala — CONSTRUCTION of the East African Submarine System (EASSy) cable has started and the system is to become operational by 2010, the International Telecommunications Union secretary general has said.
"The East African Marine System cable will also come into operation around the same time," the union's secretary general, Dr. Hamadoun Toure, said.
"When they become operational, they will free Uganda from dependence on satellite links and drive Internet costs down," Toure said at a symposium to mark the 10th anniversary of the Uganda Communications Commission at the Kampala Serena Hotel.
EASSy is a landmark fibre-optic cable project that will connect 21 African countries to each other and the rest of the world.
Toure said while Uganda suffers from international bandwidth constraints, this had not stopped the Government from pioneering a mobile Internet project.
