Zimbabwe: Shortage of Skilled Workers Affects Mining Sector

10 October 2008

Harare — Loss of skilled personnel is affecting operations in the mining sector, an official said yesterday.

Chamber of Mines president, Mr David Murangari told New Ziana that the number of skilled workers who have left the industry in recent years has risen astronomically.

"The shortage of skilled workers has continually affected the mining industry," he said

He added, "This is being fueled by employers' failure to address the plight of workers."

He could, however, not immediately provide the number of workers who have ditched the industry.

The prevailing economic environment, he added, had also contributed towards the loss of skilled workers.

"Employees in the mining sector complain that their duties do not tally with their earnings," he said.

Murangari said that most minerals were exported yet workers were being paid in local currency.

"Players in the mining sector should consider the safety and welfare of workers by ensuring that they afford decent livelihoods."

He added that a decrease in skilled workers in the country had also resulted in loss of productivity within the mining sector, one of the country's top foreign currency earners.

He also warned that the continued loss of skilled manpower, if left unattended, would result in low quality produce.
