Zimbabwe: 20 Models to Compete for Miss Tourism

10 October 2008

Harare — A bevy of 20 models will compete for the Miss Tourism Harare title tonight at the Harare International Conference Center.

The pageant will be searching for a model worthy of the theme: "Face of the Sunshine City" and a tourism ambassador.

This year's finals will see paltry prizes up for grabs, as the queen will walk away with two return air tickets to the mighty Victoria Falls, dinner for two and accommodation for two for two nights.

Whoever wins the title will also get a shopping voucher worth Z$200 million.

The first princess will win accommodation and dinner for two for two nights at any five star hotel in Harare of their choice while the second princess will be given a dinner voucher for two at any five star hotel in Harare of their choice.

But to prove that standards have really gone down in so far as pageantry is concerned in Zimbabwe, there will not be any swim wear at the contest although internationally it is quintessential that models showcase in swim wear as it is part of confidence building.

Instead, the models will strut on the ramp in what the organisers termed traditional wear, safari wear and evening wear.

Debra Chidavaenzi, the managing director of the event said it was saddening to note that the standards were going down because of depressed sponsorship.

"People should really support modelling because it is like any other industry. Its not just about the beauty but we are looking for a tourism ambassador to market our country outside the borders," she said.

Tongai Moyo, ExQ, Madiz and Sulumani Chimbetu will provide entertainment. Moyo thrilled fans in Mazoe at the party hosted for the contestants by Boss Stan.

It was a night to remember as Sulumani also made his presence felt by putting up a splendid performance.
