Uganda: Doubts Cast on Cause of Singer Jose Chameleone's Injury

Kampala — Musician Joseph Mayanja, popularly known as Jose Chameleone, yesterday denied reports that his injuries might have been caused by a beating he sustained over a drink-driving incident while in Tanzania.

A man claiming to be the musician's promoter in Tanzania claims that the singer was involved in drink-driving accident and was beaten up, although Mr Mayanja said yesterday that he does not know the man.

Patrick Busesa emailed Daily Monitor claiming to be a promoter and alleged that Chameleone was supposed to perform in Arusha on October 3 but was arrested by security personnel for drink driving and speeding on the night of October 2.

"The concert had sold-out when we rang him to no avail," Mr Busesa said in his e-mail. "Security then rang us the next day and said that they were holding Chameleone after he was caught drink-driving and over-speeding."

On Monday Daily Monitor, quoting the musician's family sources, reported that Chameleone got injured after sleep walking and falling from the third storey of a hotel in Arusha.

Mr Busesa also said they found Chameleone weak and they agreed that the concert be postponed to October 19. Chameleone said he doesn't know anybody called Busesa and denied he was his promoter for his concerts in Arusha, Tanzania.

The singer referred Daily Monitor to Mr Joseph Kusaaga, a tycoon whom he said took him to Arusha for the concerts. Mr Kusaaga told Daily Monitor that Mr Busesa is a hoax and was not the musician's promoter. He did not comment about the cause of Chameleone's injuries.
