Zambia/South Africa: Chalwe Applies for SA Residency

10 October 2008

Zambian defender Sashi Chalwe has applied for South African permanent residency to enable him to revive his career as a non-foreigner after having spent the last season without much joy at First Division side FC AK.

Following his strange decision to leave Bloemfontein Celtic despite the club being keen on extending his deal, Chalwe spent a couple of months on the sidelines before joining FC AK towards the end of last year.

At FC AK, the 25-year-old started in only two league games as he struggled with fitness.

However, having since left FC AK and a trial stint in Europe falling by the wayside, Chalwe has now chosen to become naturalised before returning to the field.

"Sashi is trying to get his permanent residence papers sorted out before he returns to playing. His contract at FC AK has expired and he has left them because the club has exhausted its foreign quota. There is a chance he could go back there once he gets his permanent residence," a source close to the Zambian tells KickOff.com.

Chalwe qualifies for the permanent residency permit as he has been in the country since 2002 when he arrived at Mamelodi Sundowns from Lusaka Dynamos as a teenager.

He then moved to Celtic in 2005 after having spent three years at Chloorkop falling out of favour in his last year with the Brazilians.
