Lagos — In its bid to crystallise exploitation of economic potentials of the north, a frontline indigenous power firm, the Geometric Power Limited, has unveiled plans to build two power generating plants in Kaduna, Kano and Katsina.

Phase one of the project, which is to be located in Kaduna, is expected to generate 1000MW of electricity dedicated to serve the three states and its environs, while another 1000MW capacity plant is to be built in Kano, under the phase two of the project.

Chairman of Geometric Power Ltd, and one time Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Barth Nnaji, said this at the on-going conference of Northern States Chambers of Commerce, Industry Mines and Agriculture (CONSCCIMA), holding in Abuja.

He said the power project would be modelled along the pattern of Aba Independent Power Project (IPP), with investments coming from both Geometric and Alpine Investments, group of prominent and high net worth individuals from the north, led by Mohammed Hayatu-Deen.

According to a statement issued by Public Affairs Manager of Geometric, Mr Oseloka Zikora, the project would also involve the construction of a 735 KM gas pipeline under a public-private partnership deal with the Federal Government.

The gas pipeline is to run from Calabar via Ajaokuta, to Kaduna to feed the gas fired turbine plants.

The project known as K3, is based on the island model independent of the national grid, with dedicated transmission lines from the power plants to the benefiting states.

Giving reasons for the choice of Kaduna, Kano and Kastina, Nnaji said it was hinged on the fact that the three states constitute Northern Nigeria's major industrial clusters representing the finest example of the entrepreneurial spirit and the best of skills.
