Abuja — Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Aliyu Modibbo Umar, has called for the overhaul of Nigeria's school curriculum to propel the nation into the league of technologically advanced countries.

He spoke on Thursday in Abuja while launching the maiden edition of the FCT Education Secretariat Journal of Curriculum Studies and Instruction.

Umar argued that the overhaul had become necessary to enable Nigeria catch up with the advanced world, just as he canvassed an educational bias in favour of Nigerian historical and cultural affiliations.

He described curriculum studies as a very important aspect in the children's development which must be fine-tuned for better results.

According to him, "we must be proactive and very fast in our handling it, because we owe it a duty to bequeath a qualitative educational system for our children".

The minister urged all stakeholders to act fast in the interest of the nation and its children in particular, reiterating that education remained the backbone of any meaningful development.

"These are some of the reasons that informed the FCT Administration's decisions to rename Abuja streets to reflect our historical antecedents and reward both our past and present heroes to enable the younger generation emulate them," Umar said.

Secretary of Education Secretariat, Hussaini Halilu Pai, in his remarks, assured that the FCT Administration would continue to build on the achievements so far made in the educational sub-sector in Abuja.
