Abuja — The Rivers State High Court has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to pay the state governor's Chief of Staff, Nyesom Wike, N3 billion for infringing on his fundamental rights.

Wike, in an ex-parte motion filed against the EFCC before the court in Port Harcourt, also obtained an order restraining the anti-corruption agency from going on with the case it is seeking to establish against him in a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The order declared the arrest and detention of the chief of staff as unconstitutional and an infringement on his right to personal liberty, freedom of movement and personal dignity.

The order was signed before Justice, C.I.Uriri by Bethel Okwu, Assistant Chief Registrar.

The order called on the EFCC to immediately release Wike from custody.

It added that the anti-graft commission, which arrested Wike on Monday over allegations of stealing N300 million from the state government's coffers, should stay further action on the matter pending the determination of the motion of notice.

The matter has been adjourned to October 20.
