Nigeria: Minister Raises Panel On Regulation of Small Arms

10 October 2008

Abuja — A committee to handle modalities for the establishment of a National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons to regulate circulation of weapons in Nigeria was on Thursday inaugurated in Abuja.

Minister of State for Defence, Fidelia Akuabata Njeze, said the inauguration was coming at a time when the peace and stability of the country is increasingly threatened by activities of armed groups.

Most conflicts in some West African states were prosecuted with these arms. The same is applicable to the ongoing restiveness in the Niger Delta in Nigeria, she noted.

The committee, which has members from Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Republic of Benin, and Guinea, is to propose the mandate and composition of the commission, recommend a structure, organogram and duties of the principal officers of the Commission's Secretariat.

It also has the mandate to recommend the legal, legislative and administrative procedures towards setting up the commission and to make any other recommendations incidental to the assignment of the committee.
