UNICEF programme communication specialist said her organization would launch a global handwashing day on October 15 at the Victoria Park in central Freetown.

Nana Gbabra Aidoo yesterday disclosed at a one-day discussion that attracted teachers and artistes at the Kimbima hotel that the programme would be a national school health programme to strengthen the health sector.

"The aim is to tell people that they should wash their hands properly with soap and water after and before eating to reduce the possibility of contracting diseases," Aidoo said adding that the celebration would be an international day of sanitation in 50 countries across the world.

"We will launch this programme to reduce diarrhea, child mortality rate in order to meet the MDG by 2015 and to be healthy in our homes and communities," she said.

Aidoo encouraged teachers and artistes in the country to spread the message through songs.

She emphasized that it was imperative for government, civil society and non governmental organizations to strengthen the health and sanitation sector in the country.

A participant Moses Conteh and teacher of Sengbe Pieh memorial secondary school said the meeting was critical in their efforts to clean their schools and homes.

"We will teach pupils about the maintenance of good health. I have learnt a lot from the workshop," Conteh said.
