Kampala — FORMER health minister Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi reported to the Criminal Investigations directorate (CID) for the third time yesterday, for further interrogation over the foiled Stanbic Bank robbery.
Muhwezi's driver and two bodyguards were arrested in connection with the sh10b attempted fraud, which took place on September 25.
Muhwezi arrived at the CID headquarters at 10:15am, flanked by his wife and four other relatives, and was questioned for close to one hour. He is supposed to report back on Monday.
The Rujumbura MP, who denies involvement in the attempted robbery, had to wait for 20 minutes for his lawyers.
"I will be back next week for more interrogations. But everything is under control and I'm not worried in any way," Muhwezi said as he walked out of the interrogation room.
Six suspects including Muhwezi's driver, Pte. David Muhumuza, and Kampala businessman Justus Kashoma, were charged with aggravated robbery and remanded in Luzira Prison.
The others on remand are officials of Stanbic Bank, including the assistant manager for executive banking, the customer relations manager and the system administrator.
According to the Police, Kashoma had been trying to withdraw sh500m and $500,000 at Stanbic Bank, Garden City branch, out of a total of sh10b that had been fraudulently wired into his accounts from the bank's general cash account.
The Police said the fact that Muhwezi's driver, who accompanied Kashoma inside the bank, was armed, made it aggravated robbery, which is a capital offence carrying a maximum sentence of death.
