Nigeria: Family of Slain Banker Formally Petitions IGP

The parents of Modebayo Awosika who was allegedly shot dead on October1, 2008 by some policemen attached to Lagos State anti-crime outfit, Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have formally written a strong worded petition to both the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro and Lagos State Police boss, Mr. Marvel Akpoyibi over the circumstances that surrounded their son's death.

In the petition which was signed by three lawyers attached to Gani Fawehinmi Chambers, the father of the banker, Chief Ayotunde and his mother Mrs. Oladiran Awosika alleged that their son who worked as a Relationship Manager with First Bank of Nigeria Plc in Victoria Island, Lagos was murdered while he was coming back home in his Kia Optima car at Lekki Expressway round-about by armed policemen on Tuesday night, 30th September, 2008 and was found dead in the early hours of Wednesday, 1st October, 2008.

The petition further reads:That on enquiry, we were informed that he had accident with his car on that night and that there was no formal report at the Lekki Divisional Police Station which falls within the jurisdiction of the scene of the purported accident.That upon visit to the scene of the

purported accident by family members, there was no other vehicle that could be said to be involved in the said accident apart from the car of our son.That it was also observed that own son's car was parked by the road side with the hand break on and thee whole car completely burnt by fire.That when family members visited the mortuary at the Military Hospital in Ikoyi, they found that the head of the deceased was badly battered without any bruises on the body.

That family members also found holes on the head showing points of entry and exit of an object suspected to be bullets from a gun.That when they got to Lekki divisional Police Station and complained to the Divisional Police Officer, there was no reasonable explanation from the police as to the cause and nature of the accident.

That some enquiry from people within the scene of the incident revealed that there were sounds of gun shots around that time of the day on the said night of Tuesday, 30th September, 2008.Stating further that from the brief facts and circumstances surrounding the banker's death, it is clear that he was murdered.

The Parents appealed to the IGP and Lagos State Police boss to use their good offices to make sure that the death of the banker was properly investigated and the culprits arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
