The Nigerian government, for through the Ministry of State Energy (Power), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Republic of France's Ministry for Trade, to pave way for French companies and private investors to participate in the development of the Nigerian economy, especially the power sector.
It is expected that the implementation of the provisions of the MoU, will comprise representatives of both countries.
The minister, Mrs. Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim, said developing the power sector ministry, is one of the most important agenda of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's - led administration, as government has acknowledged the pivotal role of adequate and reliable supply of electricity to meet the needs of the people and the socio-economic development of the country.
She also stated that the ministry had not completed most of its many projects due to financial constraints, but promised that with the assistance of government and help from private partnership, most of the projects would be completed between December 2008, and the first quarter of 2010.
According to her, the Republic of France and Nigeria, had on June 12, 2008, during the visit of the President of Nigeria to France, in a joint statement, agreed to establish a partnership with the France national transmission system, Reseau de Transport d'electricite (RTE), aimed at strengthening their cooperation in the field of power generation, transmission and distribution.
