President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf on Friday, October 10, commissioned nine officials of Government. The commissioning program took place in the C. Cecil Dennis Auditorium at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to a Foreign Ministry release, those commissioned by the President include Miata Beysolow, Minister of Commerce and Industry; Peter Bonner Jallah, Minister of National Security; Hawa Goll Kotchi, Commissioner, Governance Commission and Cllr. Ceaineh Clinton Johnson, Circuit Judge, Montserrado County.
Others commissioned were: Arthur W.B. Fumbah, Deputy Minister for Expenditure and Debt Management, Ministry of Finance; Cllr. Eve Mae Mappy Morgan, Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of Justice; Charles W. Carpenter, Jr. Deputy Minister for Rural Development, Ministry of Public works; Peter F. Zaizay, Deputy Minister for Administration, Ministry of National Security; and Philomena Bloh Sayeh, Director General, Center for National Documents and Records.
In a related development, the Government of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland announces the appointment of a new Ambassador to Liberia and High Commissioner to Sierra Leone.
A Foreign Ministry release said the new Great Britain and Northern Ireland Ambassador is Mr. Ian Noel Hughes, Her Majesty's Non Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Liberia. He assumed duties in March 2009.
Ambassador Hughes, an outstanding diplomat replaces Madam Sarah Macintoch, who will be transferring to another diplomatic service position.
Mr. Hughes serves in various positions including Her Majesty's serves in various positions including Her majesty's Ambassador, Guatemala City; Deputy High Commissioner, Mumbai Deputy Head of Mission, Mexico City, First Secretary Press and Public Affairs new Delhi and Vice Consul, Kabul.
In Foreign Ministry news, Australia and the Republic of Liberia have formalized diplomatic ties with the signing of the Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations at Ambassadorial level at the Permanent Mission of Liberia to the United Nations in New York.
According to Foreign Ministry release, Ambassador M. Nathaniel Barnes signed on behalf of the Government of Liberia while the Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations Ambassador Robert Hill signed on behalf of his Government.
Guided by their mutual willingness to develop and strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two states in political, economic, social, humanitarian and other fields, in accordance with the principles and norms enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations dated April 18, 1961, the two States decided to formalize their diplomatic ties on September 26, 2008.
Prior to the signing of the Joint Communiqué, the Ambassadors Barnes and Hill had a tete-a-tete and briefly discussed a follow-up strategy of the very fruitful high level bilateral meeting held on September 23, 2008, between the President of Liberia, H. E. Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and the Prime Minister of Australia, H. E. Mr Kevin Rudd at the Liberian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
This High Level bilateral meeting between President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd of Australia gave the green light for the formalizations of diplomatic relations at Ambassadorial level.
Meanwhile, Ambassadors Barns and Hill described the signing of the Joint Communiqué as historic.
German Gov't donates 13 vehicles to police
Mean time, the government of the Federal Republic of Germany has donated thirteen vehicles to the Liberia National Police.
Making the presentation recently at the National Police Training Academy in Paynesville, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Germany Embassy, Mr. Joem Smemler said the donation was part of his government's way of strengthening the police.
He said the police need to be visible in the streets following months of training so that they can protect the people. He urged LNP authority to prioritize the maintenance of the vehicles.
Receiving the vehicles on behalf of the LNP, Commissioner of Intelligence Kabina T. Kamara assured that German government that the Police will do all it can to maintain the vehicles.
Commissioner Kamara said it has been the prayers of the Police to have such donation from a friendly government like Germany.
He expressed thanks and appreciation for the donation and said the vehicles would go a long way in helping the police fight crimes across Liberia.
The vehicles which include two buses and eleven pick-ups value over three hundred thousand United States dollars, an LNP release said.
