Namibia: Shihepo Makes Short Work of SA Champ

Windhoek — There seems to be no stopping Namibian boxers when it comes to trading blows in the ring.

Super Middleweight boxer Willbeforce Shihepo made mince-meat of his highly rated South African opponent Kotso Motau, sending the South African champion to the canvas on no less than 3 occasions during their non-title bout at the Bloemfontein Town Hall in South Africa on Friday.

The win pushed Shihepo's record to 13 wins out of 17 fights with only four defeats in the paid ranks - certainly a remarkable record for the strongly built Namibian boxer.

Motau came into the fight with a big reputation as the national champion and bookmakers tipped the South African for an easy pay day but the Namibian had other ideas as he unleashed a flurry of stinging uppercuts and telling jabs that had the much fancied Motau in all sorts of trouble from the word go.

With exactly 25 seconds gone on the clock - South African referee Tony Nyegweny had seen enough and decided he would no longer stomach such merciless pounding for any longer and signalled the end of the contest.

The bout was one of the under cards for the unification WBA Pan African Junior Welterweight and South African National 12-round title bout between Kaizer Mabuza and Samuel Malinga.

Mabuza dethroned Malinga as South African Junior Welterweight champion on a majority decision and in the process retained his WBA Pan African crown.

Shihepo's trainer and promoter Nestor Tobias is upbeat about his boxer's showing and reckons the muscular boy could go very far if he keeps his feet on the ground. "He is definitely a great prospect and could become a world champion if everything goes according to plan. I personally think he is ready for the bigger stage and it won't be long before he gets a bite at either the continental or inter continental title," boasted Tobias.

Meanwhile, the likable boxing promoter says everything is still on track for Paulus "Ali" Nuumbembe's non-title fight against German opponent Daniel Keifer at the Windhoek Country Club Resort & Casino, this Friday.
